Penance which leads to the eternal life
When Judas understood
what he had done he was filled with regret and said: "I have sinned
in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.” After that he cast down the
pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
Matt 27:3:Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned,
repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief
priests and elders. In Matthew 27:3 tells
that Judas regretted what he had done, but why wasn’t he saved? In the Greek
Bible Matthew 27:3 there is a word metamelomai, which expresses sorrow
about what he had done and a desire to undo what he had done. The Metamelomai
word appears six times in NT, but this word doesn't ever appear such place
where there is real repentance and conversion to God. In the Greek NT
the words used of saving, repentance and conversion are always the words metanoeoo,
metanoia and epistrefoo. The penance of Judas was only sorrow and regret of a mind, but he did not repent in that he sought salvation for his sins. That's why he was not saved. Real repentance leads men always to the contrition and after contrition to Jesus Christ who forgives sins by His grace on the basis of His blood offering. The task of the gospel is not get people to know only sorrow and a bad conscience, but real repentance and contrition, which lead people to the salvation of God.
